Full interior design package from initial client meetings to schematic and detail design and construction documentation. The project is primarily financed by a very large TCM conglomerate and the client wished for elements of traditional Chinese architecture to be reflected in the design. To avoid a design pastiche of pseudo traditional elements, the design makes very subtle referencing to traditional architectural forms through the representation of the traditional timber frame buildings of the region, abstracted to form a high tech version of this concept.

The design focuses on achieving a feeling of calmness and softness in material selection and lighting. There are no point light sources used in any patient areas, diffuse lighting is used throughout and wide aperture lights are used to ensure an even lighting fill, to reduce glare and to create a softness to the interior. A prominent white frame element flows through the main public spaces, creating an indication of location through material and is also utilised as a signage locator.

The project design period was very condensed, less than 6 months from beginning to completion of detail design. The interior design was used as a period of optimization for the architecture design which lead to a lot of improvement and increase in efficiency in the architectural and construction realisation.

All details, schedules of materials, fixtures and fittings, cost controls and project supervision were included in the project scope. The adjustment period of design and schedules continued during the construction process as part of a continually evolving set of design documents.

At the core of the project is the idea of how to transition a building from public to private, from outpatient to inpatient, form city to sea. The dichotomous nature of the programmatic requirements is represented in the architectural form, the flip, which allows the design to cater for the opposing requirements of the brief. In terms of medical function, the core of the project houses all heavy medical functions and doctor pool, surrounding these areas are outpatient functions such as clinic and examination rooms, the outer perimeter layer is the hospital living room, waiting areas, main medical street and other public functions. This allows all patients to have a connection with the landscape as they move through the project whilst making the design as efficient as possible in operational terms.

The Haimen Nuclear Medicine Hospital is the first stage in a very large urban planning proposal for a ecologically centered medical park. The project aims to find the nexus of location, clinical need, nuclear isotope production and research potential to find a suitable project to pitch to the local government who are looking for proposals for future investment.

As important as the architectural and medical design was the design of the business case, to prove the validity of the proposal that would then generate the opportunity for an architectural and urban scheme proposal.

The design is shown as a somewhat modular element that may grow over time as the proposal takes form and grows into a destination for research, production, clinical outcomes and city making development.

Central to designing healthcare spaces for children is understanding things from their perspective, to see the world from 1m high.  This deep empathy and understanding of the user is the primary driver for all design decisions in the project.  From architectural form, translated in lobby design, the idea of wooden building blocks is used to carve spaces of warmth and personality, grand spaces that gradually step down in volume to a human scale.

The design uses strong colour combined with the warmth of wood and neutral grey and white to differentiate spaces based on the user.  Colour coding is used to show where to move, where to rest, where to p[lay and where to get treatment.  The colour system and the way of generating form gives the foundation for all interior design choices.

A system of modularity is used in various places to offer the future operators a high level of flexibility, something that is key to a sustainable long term health care project.  Modular design of service spaces, window boxes through to a modularity in reception and nurse station desks makes the design inherently flexible.

Playful design elements are carried throughout the various spaces.  Lighting is designed to feel like the scattering of stars or playful wooden boxes, furniture is similarly playful, soften cuboid shapes create places for diverse modes of occupation.  Feature panels in patient rooms and clinic rooms serve to allow individual departments to individualize spaces.

By combining a multitude of community functions within one space this project creates a thriving centre for community and interaction.  Retail, service, technology and exhibition are combined around a central gallery space and large public amphitheatre seating/stair element that allows for performances, films, speeches and presentations to occur within the market space.  The cross pollination of various programmatic elements creates a diversity in interaction and occupation of the space which in turn strengthens the sense of community for the development.  The central space can house a variety of programs and events and is the defining elements that enables all the surrounding functions.

The Guanling Mountain Hotel consists of 10 standard units, 5 luxury units and a large villa in addition to a large Restaurant, Cafe, Teahouse and culture building. The site is located on the mountainous region to the north west of Sichuan province, China. The local vernacular style utilises dry stone walls in construction and so it was decided to borrow from this construction method and combine this technique with clean modern lines to create a modern interpretation of the traditional building style of the region. The site is very undulating, rising some 60m from the entrance carpark to the villa and so negotiating this steeply sloped terrain became a primary design driver in the project. Views to the North and south of the site ridge capture the ‘cloud sea’ in the morning and evening as the valley fills with clouds flowing down from the Himalayan Plateau.

This Hotel, on Nanao Island off Shantou in Fujian Province, China, occupies an area of 2500m2 and represents a movement towards more high end hospitality projects on the island. The hotel hosts 25 rooms, a VIP villa, multiple layers of outdoors spaces and pools as well as public functions such as a cafe, restaurant and tea house. The design combines modern forms with a strong conceptual idea of stacking the accomodation volumes, offsetting and rotating the floor plates to create views, privacy and public areas. The strong modern forms of the architecture are contrasted by traditional Chinese elements in the interior. The steeply sloped site is dealt with through a series of platforms that house the teahouse, swimming pool and restaurant. The room volumes are angled to take advantage of the ocean views to the south of the site.
